Sonic The Hedgehog is a game on the Sega Genesis and is the first game in the entire series, releasing all the way back in 1991, a year after Super Mario World. As someone who grew up with Mario more than Sonic, the question remains... How do I feel about Sonic The Hedgehog?
To keep it simple, It's kinda fun and has a lot of experimentation to the game. The whole gimmick with sonic is how you can go really fast and that you can zoom through the levels if you know what to do. Though, it's kind of a rough start as the team was trying to figure out how to even make this game. IDK, I just go with the assumptions with how this game is designed because good god does this game has a lot of slow parts for something where you have to go fast. Dr Wiley should take some lessons from Dr Robotnik if I were to say coming from my old Megaman reviews on anonicus.net. Anyways, I'm getting a head of myself.
In this game, Sonic is pretty basic, There's momentum to the movement where if you keep running and you get your speed going you can go up walls and go through loops, You really get this kind of fast gameplay from the first and Final parts of this game. There's also no spin dashing like the future gamess if you grew up playing any of the later games in the series. There's really only a handful of worlds you can go through and never once have I realized that I was so close to beating this game before since I was getting stuck on this one obsticles in the final zone in which I just need to hit the platform to continue. Overall, you can beat this game in about a hour and a half like how long it took me. I realize that i'm going all over the place over this section.
Okay to mention it again, This game has many points in which you need to sit and wait for something to open or wait for the trap to retract back and all that and it really slows this game down to a crawl, It's worse than what Mario had in general. However, The level structure in this is interesting as there's many routes you can take depending on your skill and rewards you with such especially if you find secrets. However, I think the biggest Issue is the over abundance of traps placed through these levels like spring traps and whatnot. This made the game quite slow and I get the point is replayability to try and go through without touching traps and shit but Jesus Christ it's rough as all. Oh yeah the bosses. Now Dr. Robotnik starts out with an easy fight where he swings a ball at you and you just go to hit him. Then there's like other attacks which I forgot BUT, His worst fight was in labrynth zone in which you need to just chase him up these flight of stairs while avoiding obsticles and whatnot all the while the water is flooding. To make matters worse, Sonic is notorious for Drowning so it was probably the hardest fight in the entire game and It was just not fun, but other fights were all fine and fun.
Lastly, The music. It's just Iconic left and right. Of course Green Hill zone tends to be the most used track in this game but I've heard elsewhere of other tracks being used and they tend to be jammers. The Genesis often gets shafted for it's Music Quality but personally I absolutely love the sounds of the Genesis when done good.
Overall, Sonic The Hedgehog was deffo a start and I can see how this game can do better than Mario in areas but also has areas to work on. fortunately, this game isn't really the most reccomended game in the series as I heard much better things about the latter. It's a fun game still and worthy to check out.
